I primarily have a candid photography style - allowing a moment to play out naturally and then photographing the raw emotion that results. This style is unobtrusive and is especially perfect for aspects of the wedding such as pre-ceremony preparations, the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. My input may be minimal but I often find that it’s those unplanned, candidly captured moments that can be some of the most memorable.
Thing is, there are so many aspects to a wedding that I don’t believe you can bring out the best with just a single style of photography. When it comes to photographing individual, couple and bridal party portraits, feeling like there is pressure for you to know what to do in front of the camera can be extremely daunting. That’s why I don’t rely on just a candid approach. I also know how to provide plenty of guidance and put whoever is in front of my lens at ease so they don’t have to worry about a thing. I like to start with some basic shots, build your confidence and then get more creative. I don’t just capture images with natural light but also use various flash and other artificial lighting techniques to produce a more dramatic look and broaden the creativity that I can bring to a photograph.
Whilst I enjoy capturing portraits that are a little creative and different, I also dedicate time to photographing the traditional types of portraits with the couple, their bridal party and families. These shots are always great to have as part of your wedding album and are typically something your parents would expect to see as well. When you’re being directed, it’s easy to mistakenly assume that your images will look artificial and overly staged. In reality, there are still ways to capture some beautiful and candid portraits, composed with genuine joy and laughter, even amongst all the direction that I’ll provide. My experience as a photographer across the last 10 years has helped me to hone in on this skill. I'd tell you the secret of how it’s done but then I’d have to shoot you… with my camera (I promise my puns will be limited on your wedding day). As you can imagine, the result of leveraging multiple photography styles and using different lighting techniques is a wider range of creative photographs that beautifully tell your story.
